I wish you peace! You might check out your local Al-Anon group, for families and loved ones of those who suffer from addiction. Go to Al-anon.org to find an in-person or zoom meeting.
I'm so happy you chose Grace. It's still a very hard thing to choose to do. It takes real sacrifice that, even if no one else sees it, one can sure feel it within themselves. I'm standing with you in your hope, in your love for your brother.
Thank you for this! I’ve never heard that particular take on mercy vs grace. It does make a lot of things clearer. Will def share this with my spiritual director (a Jesuit, you’d like him) at our next meeting. Holding you and your brother in prayer.
I really appreciated your honesty in this—especially how you let a real, personal, vulnerable, and (what I would imagine) a slightly uncomfortable moment carry the meanings of mercy and grace.
What stuck with me is how clearly your story shows the difference: mercy in not pressing the full weight of what was owed, and grace in what was given beyond that. And more than that, the order of it as I'm seeing it here. That mercy can make the way for grace -that one makes room for the other.
It made the distinction feel real, not theoretical like so many conversations seem to be. Where we don't always see the daylight between them.
Grace is an amazing thing we are blessed to have a hand in. Here’s hoping you have a good nights sleep (at least 8 hours). Thoughts and prayers for you and your family.
Grace is a beautiful thing. It's not something we deserve for sure, but when it's given it is beautiful. I'm so happy you found it within your heart to give Grace when it wasn't deserved too. Draw strength from knowing you acted with the grace that Jesus brought to this Earth. I hope you experience some peace and I hope that perhaps your brother might see his sister's love. Surrounding you in prayer.

Thanks, Jack! He is out now and I’m told he’s very much enjoying a cheeseburger.
Painful. And beautiful. Thank you for your vulnerability.

You have a real gift for candidly writing where you are emotionally and sharing insights into the human experience in trying to process it.
Thanks, Jeremy!

Thank you so much for sharing this!
Thanks, Thom! I'm hoping for long term peace for this particular topic. We'll just have to wait and find out!

I hope you get that well-deserved peace. ♥️

May you have peace and some time to rest/recover after all this. Praying for you, your brother, and your family.
Now that you're through the worst of this part of the story, here's a group that helped me find a path to salvation: Al-Anon https://al-anon.org/.
And, this mantra helped me more than I can say. It's The Three C's. "I didn't cause it. I can't control it. I can't cure it."
Take care of yourself. You are being drenched in prayer.
